At Butcombe, we see making brilliant beer and keeping the spirit of independent brewing alive as just one part of what we do. We’re a company with deep roots in the south-west and as such, we consider it both our honour and privilege to do what we can to protect, refurbish and enhance the stunning pubs of our region.
With 20 Butcombe Brewery managed pubs in our stable and a further 23 tenanted pubs pouring pints of perfect Butcombe beer, we’re doing our bit to preserve the very best historic pubs across Bristol, Dorset and Devon.
One of the newest members of the Butcombe family is The Castle Inn, in Dorset’s stunning Lulworth Cove.
The Castle Inn, with its iconic thatched roof and pristine whitewashed exterior, joined our stable in late 2017 and has since undergone a dramatic transformation to ensure the 16th-century structure remains the ultimate country pub for centuries to come.
With stunning historical features throughout, plentiful outdoor and indoor seating, a vibrant, local and modern dining menu and – of course – an outstandingly stocked bar, we’re proud to welcome guests to The Castle Inn every single day.
Whether you’re stopping by to enjoy a pint of Butcombe’s traditionally brewed British beers or planning to stay the night in our boutique bedrooms, you’ll love The Castle Inn.
To celebrate a year in the Butcombe Brewery family, we reached out to David, Manager at The Castle Inn, to learn a little more about him and his beloved pub:
- How long have you worked in the Castle Inn?
I joined Butcombe and The Castle Inn in February 2018, the site was a hub of activity with builders, thatchers, engineers, plumbers, electricians and a few eager staff awaiting for the project to be completed.
- What drew you towards working in the industry?
My parents met and worked in the industry and did a great job of steering both myself and my siblings away from it….. that is until my father bought his own restaurant when I was 17 and I needed some money for my car and socialite lifestyle! Working just a few shifts a week by the end of the year I was hooked, I cancelled university plans and sought out hospitality management apprenticeships. It was the social aspect that was the biggest draw as well as seeing great opportunity to travel, after all, any nice place to live in the world needs a great hotel/restaurant servicing it.
- If you could only drink one Butcombe Beer for the rest of your life, which one would it be?
It would have to be Bohemia, oh no wait Goram, wait no Rare Breed…..erm actually no wait lets get serious, of course I would have to go Original.
- What’s the most popular beer on tap at the moment?
Original outsells any other beer that we have on 2-1.
- What do you love most about The Castle Inn?
Obviously we have a beautiful site here at The Castle Inn and being situated on the Jurassic Coast is amazing, but the thing I love the most is people. Without the characters that work here, our valued locals and the guests it would just be another pub/hotel. Corny as it sounds I truly believe it is the people that make the building.
- What’s most likely to make you smile during your workday?
Sitting in the bar at The Castle with paperwork and hearing guests praise the team on check out, it is almost like the guys have staged it sometimes the timings that good!
- What’s your favourite dish on the Castle Inn menu?
My favourite dish on The Castles Menu is the Fish of the Day – yes I know that’s wishy washy non specific answer but the availability and abundance of great local fish here makes it to hard to pick just one! It also gives the team in the kitchen some flexibility and sparks creativity.
- What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Currently the London Marathon gets me out of bed….Every morning at 7 to get a run in before I start my day or to start my day so I can get a run in later! I have never been a runner but the opportunity to tick the London Marathon off my bucket list appeared this year so I jumped at it! I will be running for Round Tables Childrens Wish (RTCW) a great Bournemouth based wish giving charity that do amazing work.
- What’s in the pipeline for the Castle Inn?
Next big project for The Castle Inn is some BOH transformations which will help us increase our offering over the summer season, there is also a new breakfast menu looming which looks fab!
