Up Close And Personal, The Methuen Arms Pub Focus

November 20, 2017

We caught up the other day with the wonderful Ashley Harlow, one half (he may say the better!) of Ash and Abi from the Methuen Arms.

The Methuen Arms, is an award winning Great British inn where hospitality meets fabulous food & drink at a relaxed pace. Set immediately beside the stately home and beautiful grounds of Corsham Court, and just eight miles from the enchanting city of Bath, Corsham is a hidden gem of charming Georgian buildings, cobbled streets, Almshouses, parkland and more, making this historic market town a must-see place to visit and stay. The property has an immense history, (Including royalty, damaged reputations and courtship…) you can find out more here.

Now, Back to Ash…

How Long Have You Worked In The Industry?

Both of us started working part-time in pubs and restaurants while at school when we were 16. After college I ran an off-licence in my home town Malmesbury, for 3 years and then took a leap into the trade in 1999 at The Pear Tree Whitley where I met Abi, in 2000.

What Do You Love About The Methuen?

We always loved the building and its stunning gardens. It’s heritage and the opportunity we knew it offered were huge draws for us and we know a few locals, so we knew the customers would appreciate our service style. We just couldn’t say no to running such a fantastic place!

What Do You Love About The Pub Trade?

It’s got to be the people. You get to meet and know so many different characters. I love that there are not many places other than a pub where everyone can go and so many different people can be together in one place having a beer.

Who Makes You Smile The Most At The Methuen?

The staff and the regulars! We love the appreciation that comes from a satisfied customer but equally our amazing team makes it all worthwhile.

What’s your Favourite Thing On The Menu?

I can change my mind throughout the week depending on what chef brings me to try. I do love the confit pork belly with sticky cheek, chorizo bulgar wheat and red pepper though.

What’s Your Favourite Butcombe Beer?

At the end of the day a Bohemia always goes down well.

Who/What Inspires You?

The competition.

When you go out and have a really good meal and the service is great and you think ‘why didn’t I think to do that first? And then you think how you can do it better.’

What Do You Do On Your Day Off?

Newspaper and coffee in the morning swiftly followed by trying to decide where to go for lunch, then a film and glass of wine on the sofa in the evening.

What Gets You Out Of Bed In The Morning?

Usually the alarm clock! There’s always something new and exciting to wake up to everyday at the Methuen so that gets me out of bed too.

What’s in The Pipeline For The Methuen?

We have just finished the second stage of our refurbishment and the pub has never looked better, we’ll be adding 5 more rooms too! We’re just about to start our cream teas in the afternoon and we’re planning some great food events as well.

And that’s all she wrote! It was an absolute pleasure having a good ol’ chinwag with Ash, you can visit their website here, or find your nearest local here.
