At Butcombe Brewery, we’re proud to brew delicious, real beer. It’s our way of paying homage to the beauty and brilliance of British beermaking history.
We quickly realised though that if we really wanted to get our award-winning beers into as many hands as possible, we’d need a few pubs of our own.
Today we’re honoured to say that there 20 Butcombe Brewery managed pubs in our stable, alongside 23 tenanted pubs pouring pints of perfect Butcombe beer.
A beautiful example of the former is The Cottage. Located on the historic harbour at Baltic Wharf in the heart of Bristol, The Cottage building dates back to 1868, when it was used as a storage space for Baltic timber. Since 1983 though, it’s been The Cottage – a fabulous local favourite for beer fans across the city.
To celebrate 150 years since its initial construction, we reached out to Joe, General Manager, at The Cottage to find out a little more about him and his beloved pub:
- How long have you worked in the industry?
On-and-off for 13 years in between studying – I started washing up in a foodie pub on the outskirts of Oxford!
- What made you want to work in the industry?
First and foremost, it was the people! Saying that, I don’t think I would still be in the industry if it wasn’t for the variety of the work. One hour I’m the host, next I’m cooking, then I’m an accountant, then I’m a plumber or event planner or marketing, barista, the list is endless. Every day is like a new challenge. How could you fail to love that?
- If you could only drink one Butcombe Beer for the rest of your life, which one would it be?
Tough one! I’d say I’m a pretty solid Butcombe Original fan though.
- What’s the most popular beer on tap at the moment?
We’ve been trialling our own branded beer and the “Cottage Inn Pale Ale” which has been flying out. Liberation Pale Ale from the Channel Islands has been another great summer beer though.
- What do you love about your pub?
Everything! We’ve got a dream team, our customers are really friendly people, the location and view are both awesome and the atmosphere is great. Roaring fires in winter, the harbour in the summer, what more could you ask for?
- Who or what makes you smile the most at the pub?
The team here are all quite quick-witted and come out with some cracking one-liners.
Also, our guests doggies never fail to make me smile.
- What do you do on your day off?
Go and meet friends and family in Bristol, Oxford or London, usually in a pub I haven’t been in before. A bit of live music is always great too, whether it’s an acoustic set in a tiny pub or a bigger band in an arena.
- What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Well, it helps in the summer when the sun comes up early. In winter, it’s sheer willpower until the first coffee.
- What’s the best dish on the pub’s menu in your opinion?
I can’t choose just one. It depends on what I’m in the mood for, but the crab and prawn linguini is probably the thing I’ve had this year… Or maybe the pulled beef roll, or the smoked fish platter… Halloumi fries or mackerel pate are both awesome as a snack too. I really can’t narrow it down!We’ve got some great dishes coming up on autumn/winter menu too, so watch this space.
- What’s in the pipeline for the pub?
Lots! Starting in a few weeks we’re launching pizza night with our quiz on a Monday, alongside game and games night, Fish & Fizz night and more! We’ve also got a few bigger plans in the pipeline but shh… They’re a secret (for now!)
