When it comes to rugby, there are few pre-match rituals as iconic as the haka. A tradition of the all-conquering All Blacks union and league sides, the haka traces its rugby roots all the way to 1888, before making its international debut in 1905.
It’s a battle cry, an intimidation tactic and, most importantly, a beautiful tribute to the indigenous Maori people and culture of New Zealand.
It’s fair to say that the haka is an iconic piece of traditional sporting theatre. So, when we wanted to create our own tribute to the stunning landscapes, incredible people and world-class beers of New Zealand… Well, we could think of no finer tribute than brewing Haka – our delectable nod to all things NZ.
Haka is a sumptuous 4.5% ABV pale ale, packed full of fruity New Zealand hops, including Nelson Sauvin – famed for its exceptionally complex fruitiness.
Aromas of tropical fruits give way to a unique grapefruit sharpness in the taste that goes beautifully with everything from bags of crisps to loaded burgers. Quite simply, it’s a malty, smooth, full-flavoured and well-balanced Bitter that simply can’t be missed.
Oh and, of course, it’s the perfect pairing for awe-inspiring Six Nations rugby.
Whilst New Zealand aren’t eligible for the Six Nations, it’s poised to be a triumphant year for New Zealand sport regardless.
With the Rugby World Cup heading to Japan in 2019 and placing them in a group containing the likes of South Africa, Italy, Namibia and Canada, New Zealand have real hope of a smooth transition to the finals, in a competition they’ve dominated historically.
Meanwhile, the All Whites (New Zealand’s international football team) are poised to take on Mick McCarthy’s rebuilt Ireland side in a November friendly. It’s a game which should provide a stern test for the young and rapidly improving All Whites, and a chance for the likes of Chris Wood to affirm their status as major players in the international game.
With Haka already flying out of out pumps though, we’ve decided to bottle a little of the magic too. As such, we’re proud to announce that Haka is making its way to bottles, ready to be purchased from our brewery shop now and our pubs very soon!
So, whenever or wherever you need the spirit of the haka, you’re a mere bottle opener away from drinking in pure glory.
