We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

And a happy new year

It’s a Christmas tune that seems as old as time itself, handed down by generation after generation – but did you know that without Bristol, you might never have heard it?

According to the Bristol University Library’s Special Collections archive, this traditional Christmas ditty was first written down by one Mr Arthur Sydney Warrell in 1935. He was a proud Bristolian and choirmaster, and it’s down to him that we have this most iconic piece of Christmas music today.

It’s a small contribution from Bristol to worldwide Christmas celebrations today, but that’s not where our gifts end, because at Butcombe we’re proud to introduce Chrismoose – our limited-edition Christmas beer.

Christmas is amazing, so in celebration of ‘the most wonderful time of the year’, we’ve crafted what we think is the perfect festive beer – Chrismoose. Better yet? We’ve made it available in our pubs nationwide throughout December.

What makes an iconic Christmas beer though? To find out, we began by searching our memories for those sights, smells and flavours which connect us to the true spirit of Christmas and spark that eternal feeling of childlike glee.

To us, Christmas means rich, spicy Christmas cake, roaring log fires crackling away in the background and sweet, festive aromas. So, when it came to prototyping Chrismoose, we knew what we had to strive for.

The result? A stunning blend of German crystal and English malts that offer nutty, toasted caramel and dried fruit notes that evoke those quintessential Christmas sights, scents and flavours.

We’re huge fans of this limited-edition tipple, and we hope you will be too, so why not park the reindeer out front, shake the snow off your cloak and join us at one of our pubs for a pint of this most festive tipple? We’d be delighted to share a drink with you, ‘tis the season, after all.
