Did You Know?

  • 1. The new Butcombe Brewery built in 2005 remains the largest new build brewery in the U.K for the last 35 years.
  • 2. 2010 sees a doubling of warehousing capability, as well as increased yard and parking facilities.
  • 3. Butcombe Bitter is the fastest growing major brand in bottles as of the latest industry statistics. Bitter is now available nationally in Morrisons, Waitrose and Tesco (Summer 2013).
  • 4. Butcombe Bitter is the West Country's most popular bitter…currently pouring in over 1000 pubs and clubs within a 50 mile radius of Bristol.
  • 5. Butcombe Bitter was the Bronze Medal Winner at the 2013 Great British Beer Festival at Earls Court, London (the 5th time it has placed 2nd or 3rd as the Best Bitter in the country).
  • 6. Butcombe Brewery was established in 1978, the same year as the Bristol Balloon Fiesta…hence the Balloons at Sunset on Butcombe Gold.
  • 7. In 2011 Butcombe brewed Adam Henson's Rare Breed, which immediately began its meteoric rise and soon became the our 3rd permanent beer. We have brewed Rare Breed in collaboration with Cotswold farmer and TV presenter Adam Henson. The beer uses the finest West Country ingredients, including Maris Otter malting barley from Adam's farm to create a fabulously fruity bitter at 4.2‰ ABV. Read more in our Beers & Cider tab.
  • 8. After brewing only Bitter from 1978 until 1999 and the arrival of Gold, Butcombe Brewery has had great success with seasonal and new beers whilst the popularity of Bitter and Gold continues to grow. Blond, Brunel IPA and Mendip Spring arrived first, then Christmas Steps and Old Vic Porter, many of which remain extremely popular and still appear regularly on our seasonal calendar. 2011 saw the arrival of the zesty, refreshing Adam Henson’s Rare Breed, which forced our hand into brewing it year round due to sheer weight of demand. Skipping forward to 2013, our 3.6‰ Great Grey Owl, a 3.6‰ American Pale Ale packed full of a medley of 5 American hops, swooped down in June and flew out of the brewery at record levels throughout the Summer. This was followed immediately by Autumn’s Haka, our 4.5‰ New Zealand-hopped bitter, which eclipsed even the GGO in reception and sales. 2014’s calendar features three new beers: Brunel Atlantic IPA at 4.1‰, Yeti ‘Glacial Pale Ale’ at 4.0‰ and Crimson King, 4.3‰ big, red beer.
