Did You Know?

  • 1. The new Butcombe Brewery built in 2005 remains the largest new build brewery in the U.K for the last 35 years.
  • 2. 2010 sees a doubling of warehousing capability, as well as increased yard and parking facilities.
  • 3. Butcombe Bitter is the fastest growing major brand in bottles as of the latest industry statistics. Bitter is now available nationally in Morrisons, Waitrose and Tesco (Summer 2013).
  • 4. Butcombe Bitter is the West Country's most popular bitter…currently pouring in over 1000 pubs and clubs within a 50 mile radius of Bristol.
  • 5. Butcombe Bitter was the Silver Medal Winner at the 2009 Great British Beer Festival at Earls Court – London (for the 3rd time!).
  • 6. Butcombe Brewery was established in 1978, the same year as the Bristol Balloon Fiesta…hence the Balloons at Sunset on Butcombe Gold.
  • 7. In 2011 Butcombe brewed Adam Henson's Rare Breed, which immediately began its meteoric rise and soon became the our 3rd permanent beer. We have brewed Rare Breed in collaboration with Cotswold farmer and TV presenter Adam Henson. The beer uses the finest West Country ingredients, including Maris Otter malting barley from Adam's farm to create a fabulously fruity bitter at 4.2% ABV. Read more in our Beers & Cider tab.
  • 8. In May 2013, Matthew Pale Ale became our 4th permanent beer. The beer was the SIBA Gold Medal Winner for its class in 2011 in its previous incarnation as our spring seasonal, Mendip Spring and we are delighted to be able to bring this great beer to you permanently as Matthew Pale Ale. Matthew Pale Ale is inspired by John Cabot, the famous seafarer and explorer, and his legendary voyage on his ship, ‘The Matthew’. In 1497 John Cabot sailed from Bristol in ‘The Matthew’ laying claim to discovering North America. Cabot’s ship, the small but beautifully built ‘Matthew’, adorns the pump clip of Matthew Pale Ale, floating on a stormy sea of a frothy pint of this 3.8% A.B.V. beer. The Matthew’s journey has become one of Bristol’s proudest achievements as is evidenced by the building of a sensational full-size working replica of the famous ship, which is moored outside the Arnolfini arts centre and gallery in Bristol.
